Nyanga : March- September 2009

In 2009, the CPM partnered with the Nyanga Arts Development Centre (NADC) based at the Xolani centre in Nyanga. CPM staff trained and mentored 15 young adults in gaining interviewing skills, doing transcription and creating a performative outcome. CPM co-ordinator, Mbongiseni Buthelezi mentored them over the 7 month period in gaining computer skills, library and research techniques and mentored them in conducting and transcribing orla history interviews. These were then workshopped to create an audio- visual exhibition in Xhosa and English called “We couldn’t walk together…a history of Nyanga 1960-1990.”

The Nyanga leg of performing stories was concluded at a closing event at Maphindi’s, where the CPM in conjunction with the NADC gave certificates to the thirteen interns who successfully completed the project. The exhibition was launched on Heritage Day, September 24 and all interviews and transcripts are housed within the CPM archive, and copies of the raw interviews and exhibition prints were presented to the NADC.
